Pedro Almodovar's dark comedy shines in spite of its occasionally tragic story line. Gloria (Carmen Maura) is a matriarch struggling against her mean husband (Luis Hostalot), two wayward sons (one of whom is a drug dealer) and her grandmother, all of whom live with Gloria in one tiny apartment. Gloria's friendship with a prostitute, Cristal (Verónica Forqué), provides her some relief, and so does the telekinetic upstairs neighbor.
