Director Charles Sturridge's lavish adaptation of E.M. Forster's novel of the same name stars Helen Mirren as Lilia Herriton, a widowed Englishwoman who travels to Italy, weds a local man and becomes pregnant. But when Lilia dies in childbirth and her disapproving relatives arrive from England to retrieve the baby, they find trouble. The top-rate cast includes Rupert Graves, Helena Bonham Carter and Judy Davis.
