After World War II, war widow Fusako (Kinuyo Tanaka) and her sister, Natsuko (Sanae Takasugi), struggle to survive. Natsuko begins an affair with a drug smuggler, but when she discovers her lover is also sleeping with Fusako, their lives change forever. Along with their friend, Kumiko (Tomie Tsunoda), the sisters turn to prostitution to make ends meet in this moving drama from legendary Japanese filmmaker Kenji Mizoguchi.
