Beaten on all fronts, soldier Franz Woyzeck (Klaus Kinski) fights a desperate battle for his sanity in director Werner Herzog's adaptation of Georg Büchner's play. Considered working-class scum and abused by his military superiors, Woyzeck is pushed to the edge when he discovers his lover's infidelities. Eva Mattes earned the Cannes Best Actress award for her portrayal of Woyzeck's girlfriend, Marie.
