In director Wim Wenders's adaptation of a Goethe novel, would-be writer Wilhelm (Rüdiger Vogler), at his mother's urging, sets out on a cross-country journey of self-discovery, picking up an odd assortment of companions along the way. When a wealthy industrialist (Ivan Desny) offers the group lodging, Wilhelm and his fellow travelers (Nastassja Kinski, Hanna Schygullla, Hans Christian Blech, Peter Kern) have no inkling of the man's dark secret.
