When he discovers that his lovely mail-order bride, Hannah (Liv Ullman), is a spirited lass instead of the meek and mild servant he wanted, rough California ranch owner Zandy Allan (Gene Hackman) turns mean in his attempts to keep her under his thumb. But as troubles on the ranch begin to mount, the woman works her way into the farmer's hard heart. Jan Troell directs this Western melodrama that also stars Harry Dean Stanton.
