Author D.H. Lawrence's understanding of the 19th-century woman is revealed in two BBC adaptations of his work. Imogen Stubbs stars in The Rainbow as young Ursula Brangwen, whose search for love is doomed by a lifetime spent daydreaming about perfection. Zoë Wanamaker and Colin Firth star in The Widowing of Mrs. Holroyd, the portrait of a woman mired in a loveless marriage and the consequences of her attraction to a younger man.
