Born on May 12, 1950, in Dublin, Ireland, Gabriel Byrne held numerous jobs -- including archaeologist, short-order cook and schoolteacher -- before beginning his acting career at the Dublin Shakespeare Society. He worked onstage and in small film roles, then gained fame in Ireland starring in soap operas.Since then, Byrne has crafted a successful career as a working actor in Hollywood. His breakout role came in 1990, when he starred as the enigmatic protagonist of Joel and Ethan Coen's quirky gangster drama Miller's Crossing.
Notable films include Cool World, Point of No Return, Into the West, A Simple Twist of Fate and The Usual Suspects. Byrne co-produced In the Name of the Father with Jim Sheridan and starred in the Broadway revival of Eugene O'Neill's "A Moon for the Misbegotten" in 2000, earning a Tony nomination. He added Emmy nods and a Golden Globe win to his résumé for his starring role as a psychotherapist in HBO's "In Treatment."
