Despite movie star looks and charisma, Billy Crudup is an actor first and a star incidentally, choosing challenging roles in films such as Inventing the Abbots that may or may not end up box office hits.Born July 8, 1968, in Manhasset, N.Y., Crudup moved often growing up, honing his class clown shtick to gain acceptance. In the process, he discovered an affinity for acting. After earning his master's degree in fine arts from New York University, Crudup took to the New York stage, receiving accolades for his performance in Tom Stoppard's "Arcadia" (1995). A year later, he would make his film debut in Everyone Says I Love You.
Critically acclaimed turns in films such as Without Limits and Jesus' Son followed, but it was Crudup's portrayal of a '70s rocker in Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous that propelled him to stardom. Recent films include Big Fish (2003) and Mission: Impossible III.
