The oldest child of a lawyer and a foundation executive, Edward Norton was born in Boston, Mass., on Aug. 18, 1969. His parents soon moved to Maryland, where Norton trained at the Columbia School for Theatrical Arts.After graduating from Yale and living in Japan for a brief stint, Norton headed to New York City and joined playwright Edward Albee's repertory company. Norton's explosive first film role was opposite Richard Gere, playing a suspected killer in Primal Fear (1996), for which he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Since then, Norton has worked with several high-profile directors, including Woody Allen, Milos Forman, David Fincher, Brett Ratner and Spike Lee. He earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of a reformed skinhead in American History X (1998) and made his directing debut with the spiritual comedy Keeping the Faith (2000).
