A member of the 1990s "Mickey Mouse Club" cast that included future pop sensations Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling began his show-business career as a singer. Born Nov. 12, 1980, in London, Ontario, Gosling was raised in a strict Mormon household and earned his stage chops performing in talent shows. On the heels of "The Mickey Mouse Club" came more TV work; by 1998, Gosling had gained teen pinup status playing the title character in "Young Hercules." Big-screen parts soon followed, including his debut as a member of the football squad in Remember the Titans (2000) and critically acclaimed turns in The Believer (2001) and The Notebook (2004).
Gosling has worked steadily in film ever since, but it was his Oscar-nominated performance in 2006's Half Nelson that cemented his reputation as one of his generation's finest actors. He netted a Golden Globe nod in 2010 for his lead role in Blue Valentine.
