Known to fans of "Grey's Anatomy" as the raffishly charming Dr. Derek Shepherd, Patrick Dempsey has transcended the teen idol status afforded by early films such as Heaven Help Us (1985) and matured into an adult actor of range and sensitivity in such fare as 2002's Sweet Home Alabama and HBO's Iron Jawed Angels (2004).Born Jan. 13, 1966, in Lewiston, Maine, Dempsey was a performer from the get-go, first as a star skier (in high school) and then as a talented juggler and magician entertaining at local venues. After making his stage debut with the Maine Acting Co., Dempsey landed a plum part in the 1983 San Francisco production of the AIDS drama "Torch Song Trilogy."
Film roles soon followed, and in the intervening years, Dempsey has amassed an impressive body of work that includes film (Scream 3, The Emperor's Club) and TV (the miniseries J.F.K: Reckless Youth, "Once and Again").
