Phillip Noyce
A film nut since childhood, Australian director Phillip Noyce made his first short film at age 15 -- a project he financed by getting friends to pay for roles. Now, he has the deep pockets of Hollywood behind him on films such as the Harrison Ford hits Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger.Born April 29, 1950, in Griffith, Australia, Noyce began his career making short documentaries about life in his native land. Soon, his horizons expanded, and he began making features -- first documentaries, then fiction. After achieving success in Australia with films such as Heatwave (1982), he finally achieved international recognition with the searing seafaring thriller Dead Calm (1989), starring Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill.
Other important films for Noyce include Rabbit-Proof Fence (the story of three Aboriginal girls in 1930s Australia) and the Michael Caine-starred The Quiet American (2002).
