Christopher Plummer
One of the great ironies of Christopher Plummer's career is that a part he apparently reviled -- Baron Von Trapp in 1965's The Sound of Music -- is the one that made him a Hollywood star.

Despite his cinematic achievements, Plummer -- born Dec. 13, 1929, in Toronto -- remains primarily a stage actor. Over a long theatrical career on both sides of the Atlantic, Plummer has established himself as one of the premier Shakespearean thespians of his time through performances in such roles as Iago in a 1982 production of "Othello."

Plummer's memorable movies include The Man Who Would Be King (1975), Murder by Decree (1979), The Insider (1999) and A Beautiful Mind (2001). Showing no signs of flagging with age, Plummer continues to make high-profile films such as Syriana (2005) and The Lake House (2006). He earned Golden Globe and Oscar nods for his fine supporting turn in 2009's The Last Station.
