Celebrated as much for her captivating smile as for her acting prowess, Julia Roberts was born Oct. 28, 1967, in Smyrna, Ga. She left home for New York City after high school and quickly landed work as a model. The acting bug bit Roberts soon after, and she eventually nabbed her first movie roles in 1988's Satisfaction and Mystic Pizza. Playing a diabetic in Steel Magnolias (1989) brought her an Academy Award nomination (for Best Supporting Actress), but it took 11 years for her to win the Oscar (for Best Actress) for her portrayal of crusader Erin Brockovich.
With an unforgettable turn as a prostitute who discovers love (and shopping) in Pretty Woman, Roberts kick-started a long string of 1990s romantic comedies that include My Best Friend's Wedding, Runaway Bride and Notting Hill. She earned a Best Actress Golden Globe nod (musical or comedy) for her role in the 2009 romp Duplicity.
