"Fresh Prince" Will Smith is a bona fide Hollywood rarity: a Grammy Award-winning rapper who has successfully crossed over into superstar leading man status in movies. Born Sept. 25, 1968, in Philadelphia, Smith -- who earned the boyhood moniker "the Prince" because of his innate charm -- was the second of four children. At age 16, Smith teamed with DJ Jazzy Jeff, and the duo quickly found fame and inked a record contract as rappers. In 1989, Smith parlayed his musical success into the long-running TV sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air."
From there, it was a short step to feature films, several of which became blockbusters, including Independence Day (1996) and Men in Black (1997). Smith garnered critical acclaim as well as Golden Globe and Oscar nods for playing boxer Muhammad Ali in Ali (2001) and a down-on-his-luck but determined father in The Pursuit of Happyness (2006).
