Seemingly fated to spend his career playing petty criminals and thugs (after bowing in 1985's Prizzi's Honor), Stanley Tucci broke free of that mold in 1996 when he played an Italian-American restaurateur in Big Night, a film he also co-wrote and co-directed.Born Jan. 11, 1960, in Katonah, N.Y., Tucci studied drama at the State University of New York at Purchase and appeared on Broadway before landing his first movie roles in the mid-1980s. After Big Night's success, Tucci returned to the director's chair for The Impostors (in which he also co-starred) and Joe Gould's Secret (2000).
Since then, Tucci has been busier than ever, snagging juicy parts in films such as Road to Perdition (2002) and The Devil Wears Prada (2006). A Golden Globe winner for supporting turns in Winchell (1998) and Conspiracy (2001), he copped another nod for 2009's The Lovely Bones, along with his first Oscar and BAFTA nominations.
