Adam Sandler was born Sept. 9, 1966, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He worked in stand-up comedy while attending New York University, from which he graduated in 1991. During this time, he made his film debut in Going Overboard (1989) and appeared on TV's "A Different World."Dennis Miller caught Sandler's act and recommended him to Lorne Michaels, who put Sandler into the cast of "Saturday Night Live." There, Sandler's wise-ass comedy persona was born; his satiric songs also made a best-selling comedy album, "Stan & Judy's Kid."
Small roles in Coneheads and Airheads evolved into the starring vehicles Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer (1998). His fans ate it up, and with The Waterboy, Sandler achieved comedy superstardom and a $20 million price tag. He often produces and writes his projects, which also include Mr. Deeds, 50 First Dates and the offbeat Punch Drunk Love.
