Allan Melvin
An accomplished character actor best known for his recurring role as big-hearted meat man Sam the Butcher on "The Brady Bunch," Allan Melvin was born Feb. 18, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo. He studied journalism at Columbia University but ultimately opted for acting, appearing first in radio soap operas before moving on to Broadway and television.

In addition to his well-known association with "The Brady Bunch," Melvin's TV credits include guest stints on "The Andy Griffith Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and recurring roles on "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C." and "All in the Family." He also provided the voices for the animated characters Bluto (of "Popeye" fame) and Magilla Gorilla.

Although Melvin's career spanned five decades, his resume includes only one major film role, in the Doris Day romantic comedy With Six You Get Eggroll (1968). He died on Jan. 17, 2008, at the age of 84.
