A well-known television actor who came by his folksy style honestly, Andy Griffith was born in Mount Airy, N.C., on June 1, 1926, and spent his early years as a stand-up entertainer before landing a lead in the Broadway play "No Time for Sergeants" (1955-56), which was later made into a movie (1958).Griffith made his film debut in Elia Kazan's A Face in the Crowd (1957), but it was his portrayal of small-town lawman Andy Taylor on "Make Room for Daddy" (1960) that led to his own long-running series, "The Andy Griffith Show" (1960-68), and secured the actor a permanent place in television history.
After more than a decade of false starts, Griffith made a triumphant return to series television with the courtroom drama "Matlock" (1986-95) and earned an Emmy nod for his performance as a vengeful father in the made-for-TV movie Murder in Texas (1981).
