Born Nov. 12, 1982, in Brooklyn, N.Y., doe-eyed Anne Hathaway began acting as a child, making history as the first teen to be accepted into The Barrow Group acting school.Hathaway first appeared on camera in the TV drama "Get Real" (1999-2000) and landed her first film role in The Other Side of Heaven, which was released after her turn as a teen who discovers she's royalty in The Princess Diaries (2001). She reprised the part for The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement and kept her tiara on for Ella Enchanted (both 2004).
But it was Hathaway's breakthrough role as a closeted cowboy's wife in Brokeback Mountain (2005) that proved the young actress capable of tackling adult fare. In 2006, she was fabulously garbed in The Devil Wears Prada and earned her first Oscar nod two years later for Rachel Getting Married. Opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in 2010's Love and Other Drugs, Hathaway delivered a Golden Globe-nominated performance.
