Linkletter became a fixture of American pop culture in the 1950s and '60s as the host of "People Are Funny" and "House Party," a pair of long-running TV variety series that debuted on radio in the 1940s. In particular, he was known for his one-on-one talks with children, whose quips made it into his best-selling 1957 book Kids Say the Darndest Things.
In 1970, Linkletter won a Grammy for the spoken-word recording "We Love You, Call Collect," an emotional ode to parent-child communication he taped with his daughter Diane shortly before her death in 1969. He died May 26, 2010, at the age of 97.
