As the Beatles, four lads from Liverpool, England -- Paul McCartney (1942- ), John Lennon (1940-1980), George Harrison (1943-2001) and Ringo Starr (1940- ) -- forever changed the face of popular music with their blend of rock 'n' roll, pop, and rhythm and blues.Already a smash in England, the mop tops met the American public in February 1964 with a performance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," followed by a whirlwind U.S. tour. Chronicling the dizzying fishbowl lives the lads were leading at the time, director Richard Lester's A Hard Day's Night (1964) perfectly captures Beatlemania's heady early days in black-and-white, documentary-style (although fictionalized).
In the remaining years that the Beatles were together, they made several more films, including 1965's Help, the TV movie Magical Mystery Tour (1967) and the 1968 animated feature Yellow Submarine (for which they supplied the songs).
