Bette Midler
Bette MidlerBorn in Honolulu on Dec. 1, 1945, self-proclaimed diva Bette Midler got her showbiz start singing in gay bathhouses accompanied by Barry Manilow on the piano. Known for her brassy demeanor and old-fashioned showmanship, Midler established herself as a popular entertainer through a series of successful albums and sell-out concerts before becoming a movie star.

After minor roles in film and television productions, Midler broke out with an Oscar-nominated performance as a hard-living rock star (based loosely on Janis Joplin) in The Rose (1979). Other notable films include Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986), Ruthless People (1986), Outrageous Fortune (1987), Beaches (1988) and For the Boys (1991), which earned her another Oscar nod.

Midler has won four Grammy Awards, three Golden Globes, one Tony Award and three Emmys, and has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
