Standing tall at 8 feet 2 inches, the aptly named Big Bird (originally voiced and performed by puppeteer Carroll Spinney) is quite possibly America's most famous yellow canary.Since his television debut on Jim Henson's "Sesame Street" in 1969, Big Bird has charmed generations of kids with his characteristic innocence and childlike wonder (he's described by the show's writers as a 6-year-old) -- and his memorable friendship with Mr. "Snuffy" Snuffleupagus. He played a central role in the classic 1983 episode that dealt with the death of neighborhood shopkeeper Mr. Hooper, an episode subsequently hailed as a landmark in children's television programming.
Big Bird went on to appear in several films and specials featuring the Muppets, including The Muppet Movie (1979), Follow That Bird (1985) and The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland (1999).
