Comedian, writer, producer, director and children's book author Billy Crystal was born March 14, 1947, to a Long Island music-industry family. He attended New York University and began performing stand-up comedy in the 1970s.Crystal played television's first regular gay character on "Soap" and made his film debut in the Joan Rivers-directed comedy Rabbit Test (1978). A stint on "Saturday Night Live" was followed by a bit part in This Is Spinal Tap and a major role in the buddy-cop flick Running Scared.
Crystal's movie career took off with a memorable cameo in The Princess Bride and leads in Throw Momma From the Train and the enduringly popular When Harry Met Sally. The actor hit a fertile period in the 1990s with the hit City Slickers, Mr. Saturday Night, Forget Paris, Hamlet, Analyze This and Monsters, Inc. The New York Yankees fan also wrote and directed the acclaimed baseball TV movie 61*.
