Born Sept. 5, 1929, in Oak Park, Ill., ex-accountant Bob Newhart capitalized on his buttoned-up image in his stand-up act, debuting on camera with "The Bob Newhart Show" (1961), a variety series that promptly garnered him an Emmy nomination.From 1972 to '78, Newhart starred in his first TV sitcom (also titled "The Bob Newhart Show") as a beleaguered psychologist and continued his successful television run portraying a Vermont innkeeper in "Newhart" (1982-90), which netted him three more Emmy nods. In addition to his work on the small screen, Newhart has appeared in numerous films, including Hell Is for Heroes, Catch-22, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, and Elf (both 2003).
Newhart scored Emmy nominationsas a guest star on "ER" and as a supporting actor in The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice. He also earned kudos playing a recurring character on "Desperate Housewives."
