Best known for her portrayal of an iconic British royal (Elizabeth, for which she won numerous awards and nominations, including one for the Oscar), Cate Blanchett was born in Melbourne, Australia, on May 14, 1969.After a short stint traveling in Europe and North Africa, she enrolled at the National Institute of Dramatic Art and proved herself in theater productions and on Australian TV. After landing a lead role in Oscar and Lucinda, Blanchett starred in The Talented Mr. Ripley, Pushing Tin and An Ideal Husband, and joined cinema's biggest franchise by playing an elf queen in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
In 2004, Blanchett was nominated for a Golden Globe for her portrayal of hard-driving, justice-seeking journalist Veronica Guerin in the movie of the same name. She won the Oscar statuette for playing Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator (2004) and received another nod for Notes on a Scandal (2006).
