Woodward first scored with audiences as the titular spy in the British series "Callan" (1967-72), so much so that he found it difficult to shed his character's iconic persona and land other types of parts. Nevertheless, he gained widespread fame (and critical acclaim) playing a former British agent in the hit American series "The Equalizer" (1985-89).
Woodward also starred on the big screen, most notably in The Wicker Man (1973) and Breaker Morant (1980); later in his career, he appeared as a murderous villager in Hot Fuzz (2007). He died of pneumonia Nov. 16, 2009.
