Elliott Gould was born Aug. 29, 1938, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Acting onstage from his teen years, Gould moonlighted as an elevator operator, vacuum cleaner salesman and chorus boy. He eventually found success on Broadway with "I Can Get It for You Wholesale," opposite future wife Barbra Streisand.Gould's 1964 film debut wasn't released until the early '70s, retitled Quick, Let's Get Married. He fared better with The Night They Raided Minsky's and 1969's Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (which earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination). It was MASH (1970) that made Gould a counterculture hero.
The Long Goodbye, California Split and Harry and Walter Go to New York were followed by less memorable films. Gould reemerged in the '90s as a character actor in Bugsy and American History X, and later in Ocean's Eleven (2001). "Friends" fans know him as the father of Monica and Ross Geller.
