A great Hollywood heavy who got to show his sensitive side, Ernest Borgnine was born to Italian immigrant parents on Jan. 24, 1917, in Hamden, Conn. A veteran of World War II, he did regional theater and early TV before making his film debut in China Corsair (1951).He played memorable villains in From Here to Eternity and Bad Day at Black Rock before going against type with the lead role in Marty (1955), for which he won the Best Actor Oscar. He then conquered TV as the title character in the popular sitcom "McHale's Navy." His many Western, military and disaster movie roles include parts in Vera Cruz, The Dirty Dozen, The Wild Bunch, Hannie Caulder and The Poseidon Adventure.
Still active in the '90s, Borgnine appeared in Gattaca (1998), lent his voice to "SpongeBob SquarePants" and made many TV and movie cameos, including one in the 1997 feature remake McHale's Navy.
