Fess Parker
Unlike his most famous character -- an iconic frontiersman who was born on a mountaintop in Tennessee -- Fess Parker was born Aug. 16, 1924, in Fort Worth, Texas. After serving in World War II, he moved to Hollywood to become an actor and caught the eye of Disney scouts, who cast him as the lead in a three-part Davy Crockett miniseries.

Virtually overnight, the lanky Parker became a star, spawning a craze among coonskin cap-loving children and earning a 1955 Emmy nod as "Most Outstanding New Personality." Two years later, he appeared in the Disney classic Old Yeller. The following decade, he starred as another legend of the American West, playing the titular pioneer explorer in "Daniel Boone" (1964-70), a television series he co-produced and occasionally directed.

Later in life, Parker opened a winery in California and became a successful hotelier. He died March 18, 2010, at the age of 85.
