Born Nov. 13, 1953, in the small town of Monroe, Ga., Frances Conroy studied at New York City's prestigious Neighborhood Playhouse before blossoming into one of American theater's busiest thespians and becoming a favorite of playwright Arthur Miller.After moving to California to play Louisa May Alcott on stage in "Romance Language," Conroy turned her attention to television and film. Among her numerous TV credits are "Newhart" and "The Twilight Zone," while her early movie roles include Rocket Gibraltar (1988), Scent of a Woman (1992) and Sleepless in Seattle (1993).
Conroy's portrayal of emotionally complex widow Ruth Fisher on the HBO drama series "Six Feet Under" brought not only critical acclaim for the red-haired actress but several Emmy nods and a Golden Globe Award in 2004. Other notable films on her résumé include The Aviator (2004) and The Wicker Man (2006).
