Frank Sinatra
"The Chairman of the Board" Frank Sinatra was born Dec. 12, 1915, in Hoboken, N.J., the son of Italian immigrants. Sinatra's singing skill won first prize on a radio amateur hour, which landed him vocalist gigs with the Harry James and Tommy Dorsey bands. He was first seen onscreen singing with the bands in early 1940s musicals, then had his first acting role in Higher and Higher (1943).

A phenomenon as a solo performer, Sinatra was also a hit in the movies in Anchors Aweigh, On the Town, High Society and The Manchurian Candidate, among others. He won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar as Maggio in From Here to Eternity (1953) and was nominated again for Man with the Golden Arm.

In the '60s, Sinatra began producing and directing and continued in lead roles until 1980. After making his final film appearance in Cannonball Run II (1984), he resumed his recording career. He died May 14, 1998.
