Born July 6, 1951, in Toowoomba, Australia, Geoffrey Rush began his acting career at Brisbane's Queensland Theatre Company. During his lengthy and successful time in stage work, he made his film bow in Hoodwink (1981).Rush became an international celebrity with his portrayal of pianist David Helfgott in Shine (1996), for which he won the Best Actor Oscar. He followed with a series of costume dramas, including the 1998 films Elizabeth and Shakespeare in Love (receiving an Oscar nod for his supporting turn) and 2000's Quills (earning another Best Actor Oscar nomination).
Rush has also played a wide variety of parts in Frida (2002), Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) and the title character in HBO's The Life & Death of Peter Sellers. The latter netted him Golden Globe and Emmy awards in 2005. Rush's later work includes a superb performance in The King's Speech (2010), which brought him Golden Globe and Oscar nods.
