A Grammy-winning comic turned actor whose satirical stand-up sets helped break the silence on once-taboo topics like language, sex, religion and politics, George Carlin was born in New York City on May 12, 1937. A high school dropout by the age of 14, Carlin joined the U.S. Air Force and found work in radio before honing his stand-up skills and ultimately appearing in the 1960s on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Tonight Show," where he served as a frequent guest host. But it was Carlin's decided change of direction in the 1970s that would come to represent his trademark style: that of a longer-haired, observational cynic who relished in the folly of human error and wasn't afraid to push the envelope when it came to language -- or longstanding obscenity laws.
Carlin's film resume includes Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1986) and Cars (2006). He died on June 22, 2008, at the age of 71.
