The heavy-browed, cigar-wielding comic genius known as Groucho Marx was born Julius Henry Marx on Oct. 2, 1890, in New York City. It was his mother, Minnie Schoenberg -- who came from a famous vaudeville family -- who launched Groucho and his brothers Chico, Harpo, Gummo and Zeppo into show biz.The Marx Brothers made their first film, The Cocoanuts, in 1929, a result of their stage success. In the '30s, they made a series of outrageous comedies that became classics: Animal Crackers, Monkey Business, A Day at the Races, Horse Feathers and their two greatest, Duck Soup (1933) and A Night at the Opera (1935).
As the popularity of the Marx Brothers films waned, Groucho moved on to solo success as a radio and TV entertainer, hosting the long-running hit "You Bet Your Life," which showcased his talent for ad lib. He made film appearances through 1968's Skidoo, and died on Aug. 19, 1977.
A Night at the OperaThe Marx Brothers -- Groucho, Harpo and Chico -- wreak havoc in the opera house in one of their biggest hits. Penned by Morrie Ryskind and George S. Kaufman, the film contains perhaps the greatest Marx comedy bit ever: the crowded stateroom scene. Kitty Carlisle and Allan Jones are charming as the... Read More
Duck SoupThanks to the patronage of well-heeled widow Mrs. Teasdale (Margaret Dumont), Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho Marx) becomes dictator of the tiny country of Freedonia. Monkey BusinessOne of the Marx Brothers' funniest movies, the title of the film says it all as Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Zeppo stow away on a luxury liner. Before long, all hell breaks loose, with more sight gags and one-liners on display than entrees at a midnight buffet. Look fast for their father, "Frenchy,"... Read More
Horse FeathersGroucho Marx stars as Prof. Quincy Adams Wagstaff, who's appointed head of Huxley College in this laugh riot that does to academe's ivy-covered halls what Duck Soup inflicted on military-minded hawks. Most of the fast-flying action centers on the big football game with rival Darwin College. When... Read More
Animal CrackersGroucho Marx portrays celebrated African explorer Capt. Spaulding, who's just returned to the states to inflict comic carnage on the highfalutin party of society matron Mrs. Rittenhouse (Margaret Dumont), regaling guests with tales of his adventures in the wild ("I shot an elephant in my pajamas;...
