Harold Lloyd
Born on April 20, 1893, in Burchard, Neb., Harold Lloyd found his niche as a silent-film everyman in the 1920s with the help of his popular "glasses" character, an optimistic American who never left home without his spectacles.

His alter ego debuted in Over the Fence (1917) and went on to star in a series of crowd-pleasing films, charming audiences with madcap -- and often death-defying -- stunts in A Sailor-Made Man (1921), Safety Last! (1923), Girl Shy (1924), The Freshman (1925), For Heaven's Sake (1926), The Kid Brother (1927) and Speedy (1928).

When it came to box-office receipts, Lloyd outshone his comic contemporaries Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton throughout most of the 1920s, although his career slowed down with the advent of cinematic sound. He died on March 8, 1971, at the age of 77.
