Born June 11, 1959, in Oxford, England, Hugh Laurie attended Cambridge University, where he was a champion rower but was forced to stop athletics for health reasons. He then joined the comedy troupe the Footlights Club, where he met fellow thespian Emma Thompson and, through her, Stephen Fry, who became Laurie's comedic collaborator on a variety of projects that includes the TV shows "Jeeves and Wooster" and "A Bit of Fry and Laurie."Most widely known for his role in Britain's "Black Adder" comedy series, Laurie rose to prominence in the United States portraying cynical physician Gregory House in the hit drama "House, M.D.," a role that's netted him multiple Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe awards (in 2006 and 2007).
Laurie also played memorable characters in films such as Sense and Sensibility (1995), 101 Dalmatians (1996), The Borrowers (1997) and Stuart Little (1999).
