Born John H. Lebzelter in Newark, N.J., on Sept. 18, 1920, Jack Warden began as a prizefighter before serving in World War II and reading his first play while recovering from an injury. He made his on-screen debut alongside fellow first-timers Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson in the military comedy You're in the Navy Now (1951) and scored a small role in From Here to Eternity (1953).But true fame eluded him until his breakthrough performance opposite Henry Fonda in 12 Angry Men (1957). Warden won an Emmy for playing Chicago Bears coach George Halas in Brian's Song (1971) and received Oscar nods for his work in Shampoo (1975) and Heaven Can Wait (1978) before starring in his own detective drama "Crazy Like a Fox" (1984-86).
Other notable films before his death on July 19, 2006, include Bullets Over Broadway (1994), While You Were Sleeping (1995) and The Replacements (2000).
