James Franco's high school classmates voted him the student with the best smile, yet it was his brooding qualities that first caught the attention of audiences.Born April 19, 1978, in Palo Alto, Calif., Franco dropped out of college to study acting. After making his big-screen bow in 1999's Never Been Kissed, he attained heartthrob status playing rebellious Daniel Desario in the television series "Freaks and Geeks." A Golden Globe-winning turn in the TV biopic James Dean (2001) cemented Franco's place in the public consciousness.
Portraying Peter Parker's friend-turned-foe in Spider-Man, Franco hit the jackpot in 2002. That success has enabled him to alternate between big-budget Hollywood films, serious works such as Milk (2008) and lighter fare, including Pineapple Express (which brought him another Golden Globe). 2011 proved a banner year for Franco with an Independent Spirit Award win -- plus Golden Globe and Oscar nods -- for his lead role in 127 Hours.
