Gammon is perhaps best known for his portrayal of a baseball manager who guides his hapless team toward improbable victory in Major League (1989) and Major League II (1994). He also played Don Johnson's father on "Nash Bridges" (1996-2001) and logged memorable supporting turns in Urban Cowboy (1980) and Cold Mountain (2003).
In 1996, Gammon played his first -- and last -- Broadway role, earning a Tony Award nomination in the revival of Sam Shepard's play "Buried Child." He died July 16, 2010, at the age of 70.
