Jane Campion
Jane CampionThe daughter of an actress-writer and a theater-opera director, Jane Campion was born in Wellington, New Zealand, on April 30, 1954. Her early shorts were well-received on the film festival circuit, and one of them, Peel, won the Palme d'Or at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival.

Known for her compelling depictions of female outsiders and her often poetic explorations of these women's lives, Campion went on to receive critical acclaim for 1990's An Angel at My Table. Her best-known film, The Piano (1993), captured many international awards, including the Palme d'Or, the French Cesar for Best Foreign Film and several Australian Film Institute Awards. The film also earned Campion a Best Directing Oscar nomination and a win for Best Original Screenplay, as well as Oscars for Holly Hunter's and Anna Paquin's performances.

Other notable films include Portrait of a Lady, Holy Smoke and In the Cut.
