Daughter of Henry and sister of Peter, Jane Fonda was born Dec. 21, 1937, in New York. After dropping out of Vassar, she studied art in Paris and modeled in New York, where she enrolled at the Actors Studio.Fonda made her screen debut in Tall Story (1960) and went on to become a major '60s sexpot through her work in such films as then-husband Roger Vadim's Barbarella (1968). Critical acclaim followed with an Oscar-nominated performance in They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969). Two years later, Fonda won the Best Actress Academy Award for her role in Klute, capturing the honor again eight years later for Coming Home (1978). She also received Oscar nominations for her work in Julia and On Golden Pond (the only film she made with her father).
After marrying media mogul Ted Turner and appearing in 1990's Stanley & Iris, Fonda left acting. She made a 2005 comeback in Monster-In-Law.
