McTeer -- who trained at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art -- was already well-known in England when she received a 1997 Tony Award (among other honors) for her performance in Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House" on Broadway. Still, she remained a relative stranger to American audiences even after nabbing a Golden Globe and an Oscar nod for the indie drama Tumbleweeds a few years later.
In 2009, the actress racked up a Tony nomination for her portrayal of Mary, Queen of Scots, in "Mary Stuart." McTeer received Emmy and Golden Globe nods later in the year for her supporting role as Winston Churchill's wife, Clemmie, in the HBO production Into the Storm.
