Born in New York's Catskill Mountains on Dec. 12, 1970, Jennifer Connelly grew up in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. She began appearing as a model in print ads at age 10 and eventually landed gigs in TV commercials.Connelly's first film role was in director Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America (1984), and she followed up with Phenomena (1985). After taking time off to attend Stanford University, she played smaller parts in movies such as The Rocketeer (1991) and Of Love and Shadows (1994).
Starting with Dark City in 1998, Connelly starred in a string of critically acclaimed films that included Requiem for a Dream and Pollock (both 2000), culminating in a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her work in A Beautiful Mind (2001). After tackling the big-budget actioner Hulk (2003), she earned high praise for her portrayal of the emotionally confused Kathy Nicolo in House of Sand and Fog (2003).
