Like his pal Sammy Davis Jr., Jerry Lewis was to the stage born, the son of borscht-belt comics whose act he appeared in during his youth. Born March 16, 1926, in Newark, N.J., Lewis was a struggling entertainer when he met handsome crooner Dean Martin. With Martin playing the laid-back straight man and Lewis the overamped fool, the pair embarked on a 10-year partnership (1946-1956) that made them stars and resulted in a string of hit movies, including My Friend Irma (1949) and Artists and Models (1955). On his own, Lewis also moved into the director's chair on films such as The Bellboy (1960), The Ladies Man (1961) and The Nutty Professor (1963).
Out of vogue and too old to play the childlike roles he was known for, Lewis made few films during the 1970s. But in 1983, he received some of the best reviews of his career for his performance in director Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy.
