He trained in wushu, China's national martial arts style, from childhood, winning his first medal in the sport at age 9.While a teenager, Li made his film debut in Shaolin Temple, the movie that launched the Hong Kong martial arts craze of the 1980s. A plethora of very popular Hong Kong action flicks (with numerous alternate titles) followed; by the mid-'90s, Once Upon a Time in China, Black Mask and The Defender were getting release, and notice, in America.
Hollywood beckoned, and Li made his U.S. debut as a villain in Lethal Weapon 4. Li turned down the lead in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in favor of his first U.S. starring role, in Romeo Must Die (2000). His American films include Kiss of the Dragon, The One and Cradle 2 the Grave.
