Widely recognized as an accomplished character actor, Jim Broadbent was born May 24, 1949, in Lincolnshire, England. He was educated at a Quaker boarding school and attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, where he discovered his passion for acting.Broadbent's first film appearance was a bit part in the 1978 Jerzy Skolimowski film The Shout, and he continued to develop his acting chops in Time Bandits (1981), Brazil (1985), Bullets Over Broadway (1994), Richard III (1995) and Topsy-Turvy (1999).
Broadbent's breakout year proved to be 2001, when he starred in three hit films: Bridget Jones's Diary, Moulin Rouge! (for which he won a BAFTA) and Iris, which garnered Broadbent a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his compelling portrayal of devoted husband John Bayley. He also went on to receive Emmy nominations for his roles in the TV movies The Gathering Storm and Longford.
