The smash hit gave the Muppets instant popularity, and in 1976 they starred in "The Muppet Show," which became an international hit. Several feature films followed, including The Muppet Movie and The Muppets Take Manhattan.
In addition to writing, directing and producing numerous Muppet television shows and movies, Henson voiced many of the characters, including the popular Kermit the Frog -- who was often called Henson's alter ego. He also created other children's shows, notably "Fraggle Rock." Henson died on May 1, 1990, from bacterial pneumonia; his funeral was attended by more than 1,000 people and Muppets.
